We, as a family, are "virtually" participating in the 10th Annual Walk for Autism - Virginia on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas, VA. Proceeds from the Walk are added to the Intervention Assistance Fund managed by the Autism Society of Northern Virginia. Families throughout Northern Virginia can apply semiannually for mini-grants paid from this fund. These mini-grants help cover costs of various Autism treatments which are minimally covered by health insurance if at all. Unfortunately many children go without therapy because of the extreme cost to their family.
Due to a prior commitment, we will unfortunately not be able to attend the Walk this year; however we are committed and dedicated to the mission of AS-NV and the much needed assistance they give the families affected by Autism!
The incidence of Autism was 1 in 166 when Christian and Brandon were diagnosed in 2005... now it is 1 in 68 births per year. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability. This rate is higher than cerebral palsy, childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis and juvenile diabetes combined. Autism affects 4 times as many boys as girls. Autism does not discriminate by geography, class or ethnicity.
Our family has gone through a lot of changes this year, but with Christian and Brandon doing so well at their respective schools we feel like we are truly blessed!! They are in 6th grade... Brandon started a whole new journey of his own - MIDDLE SCHOOL! He currently attends Francis C. Hammond MS after being at John Adams ES for 10 years! He is getting more and more independent and is acclimating well to a new school, teachers and paraprofessionals. Christian continues to excel both academically and behaviorally at his schools new and bigger location! This is his 3rd year at CARD - VA School.
Both boys are doing so well because of continued treatments, dedicated and caring past and present teachers, paraprofessionals/therapists, school staff, medical professionals, summer TR camp staff/volunteers and most especially because of prayers on their behalf!!
We understand that it has been difficult for many in this economy, so if you are unable to make a donation, please continue to pray for our family and for all those affected by Autism.
Thank you in advance for your generosity, support and prayers!
Mildred, Julius, Christian and Brandon/Team RIVERA
If you prefer to donate by check, please make it payable to "AS-NV" with "Walk for Autism-VA/Team RIVERA" in the memo area and either mail it ASAP to Mildred Rivera at 5925 Quantrell Ave. #204, Alexandria, VA 22312 or if applicable, put it in Christian's or Brandon's backpack. I will attach the necessary paperwork to it and mail it to AS-NV.
